Audition for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir: The Written Test - Phase II

I received notice that I passed the first audition process and was moving on to the second part. This included taking a music theories test. The test was scheduled for October 12, 2013 at 9:00 am. Wowzers. I was excited, then I was scared. LOL. My audition for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir was in the second phase: the written and listening test.

Music Theory. What do I know about music theory?

I think I know enough to be dangerous. After picking up the study materials for the  Music Theory test I went through the workbook. I realized this would be a long and difficult test for me. Why? Because I love music and I enjoy it but I know hardly anything about the science of it all.

It's been a long time since I've studied for a test. The last test I studied for was my licensing test to be a counselor. That was a hard test and I vowed to never take a test again. Yeah, right.

I spent a lot of time reviewing the book. I studied what I could and revisited chapters over and over again.

I took Trax to the Tabernacle the day of the test. While on Trax and met Greg Sagers. We  would both eventually make it into the choir together. He approached me because he saw that I was holding the same workbook. We talked about the test and about studying. It was nice to make a friend.

We entered the Tabernacle through one of the doors on the southwest side of the building. We were then escorted to the "horseshoe". It's a large room that is shaped like a horseshoe. Inside were long tables with chairs set up for I would guess about 120 people.

As we entered we checked in at a desk with our name. Next to my name on the paper was the title "Baritone". I guessed they had assigned me to Baritone from my CD audition. We were given pencils and asked to take a seat. We also checked in with a man from the front with a booming bass voice. He asked our names as we took our seats and checked the name off on a piece of paper.

Once it was time to start he began. I noticed how punctual he was.

He calmed us down a bit and talked to us about taking the test and expectations.

The lady I was sitting by had a strong smell of perfume. It was kind of overwhelming since we were so close together. It was hard to focus because I felt like a bouquet of flowers was being stuffed up my nose the whole time.

The first part of the test was listening. The second was written.

I took a long time on the test. I blanked out a couple of times and had to regroup my thought.

After the test was over and I left the building I was relieved it was over but I was also freaking out about how I did.

Either way, I thought to myself, I made it this far and I'll be prepared next year for the test because at least I know what it is like to do it.

The written and listening test part of my audition for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir was over and I was glad.
