Experience This Live #2 Unfold Ye Portals

Charles Gounod
In this ongoing series of music you should hear the choir sing live I offer this gem.

Unfold Ye Portals from The Redemption by Charles Gounod.

Charles Gounod (June 17, 1818 - October 18, 1893) was a French composer who is best known for his Ave Maria based on a work by Bach. He is also known for his opera Faust. His mother was a pianist and his father was an artist. He composed many works and later in life considered the priesthood but decided against it and was married. He was continually interested in religion and it inspired his music. He died on October 18, 1893 and is buried in Paris, France.

During our rehearsal Mack Wilberg also mentioned that Charles Gounoud also composed of O Divine Redeemer. One of my father's favorites songs.

Why you should hear this live:

While we have so many wonderful technologies to help share experiences there is nothing like hearing this piece in the Tabernacle with the orchestra and choir. In hearing it in the Tabernacle and watching it on television later it was apparent that the transmission of it cannot capture the majesty of this piece.

Our performance of this piece last week also included an extended version. The video below does not have that ending.

This is definitely a piece that should be heard live if at all possible. It will shake you to your core because that is what it did to me.
